As part of their continuous support towards the environment, a number of five star hotel properties have participated in a sea bed clean up organised on the 5th of June 2008 celebrating world Environment day. The clean up took place in various beaches surrounding the participating hotels including the Merkanti reef area and St Georges bay.
The Hotels taking part in this initiative were: The Westin Dragonara, The Intercontinental, Radisson SAS Bay Point Resort, Radisson SAS Golden Sands Resort & Spa,, Le Meridien, Corinthia Hotels, The Grand Excelsior Hotel and Hilton Malta who this year hosted the event from the Merkanti Beach club.
This event which is planned to be an annual one, was officially opened by the Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Mario Demarco, who stated the importance of the 5 star properties in ensuring that Malta delivers a five star product for its tourists. He also mentioned that this initiative shows a commitment from 5 star hotels in achieving this goal. Oliver Lautier, from the Ministry of Environment and the CEO of the Malta Hotels and Restaurant Association Mr George Schembri were also present for this dive. Various members of the management teams from the different hotels including General Managers and hotel owners were also present.
Thirty team members from local 5 star hotels, all of them qualified divers took part in this event. The divers were assisted by Abyss Diving School, Dive Wise and Yellow Fun, who provided the boat, barge and the expertise of a professional diver to assist. Various other helpers from the different hotels escorted the barge to the dive areas in order to assist in the pick up of the various items collected from the sea bed. All the participants were pleased to be continuously contributing for a better future and safer environment. |
